How it works

What is pelvic floor physical therapy?

Treating the root cause, not just the symptoms.

Your pelvic floor is a group of muscles, ligaments, and connective tissue that stretches like a hammock across the base of your pelvis. It supports your bladder, bowel, and uterus, controls when you pee and poop, plays a key role in sexual function, and works with your breath and deep core to stabilize your spine and hips.

When these muscles are too weak, too tight, or not coordinating well, the result can be leaking, pressure, constipation, or pain. Pregnancy, birth, surgery, menopause, chronic straining, and high-impact exercise are all common contributors. It's also why Kegels alone often don't work: a pelvic floor that is already too tight needs to learn to relax, not squeeze harder.

Pelvic floor physical therapy is a conservative, evidence-based treatment. Clinical guidelines, including those from the UK's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), recommend supervised pelvic floor muscle training as the first treatment for stress urinary incontinence, before medication or surgery. At Body Motion Physical Therapy, your care is led by a Doctor of Physical Therapy who specializes in women's pelvic health.

I finally found Body Motion PT at the urging of my massage therapist after complaining of female health issues for over 2 years. I had a child 2012 and 2015 and am 42 for reference. Multiple doctors for YEARS told me I was fine.

Some of my issues were:

Had to pee every hour, greatly affected travel, driving, work, etc
Left ankle swelling
Excruciating abdominal & leg pain/cramps for all but 1-2 days per month
Was taking Tylenol/ibuprofen every single day for years
Chronic fatigue
Bloating so intense ppl would ask if I was expecting, none of my clothes fit right
Sex could be uncomfortable
Some nights kept up all night w/ cramps/sweating
Couldn’t do more than hour of yard work without being exhausted
Quit exercising besides light yoga
Social life disappeared
Digestion and elimination wasn’t working properly

After a few months of treatment:
I can now do everything I want to do without pain; including taking care of the kids, animals, mini farm, house etc. I am back to strength training, pilates, etc a few days a week. I’m looking forward to hiking again and traveling more. The mental fatigue from the constant pain has lifted and I feel like myself again. Added bonus—all my clothes fit much better!

The absolutely phenomenal staff at Body Motion PT saved me from utter hopelessness and so much pain. I am extremely thankful to have found them and grateful that I was able to get care. I wish every woman was able to get pelvic floor PT, especially after having children.

Yes, it can be a commute (for some) and it can get expensive, but for me, it has been the only thing that has helped my quality of life.

I highly recommend 🙂

I started seeing Dr. Riley at Body Motion back in September 2020, about 10 weeks into my second pregnancy, and saw her weekly until I delivered a few weeks ago in early April 2021. I had experienced issues with incontinence since having delivered my son a couple of years prior, and I was terrified that my symptoms would become imminently worse as my pregnancy progressed. I was also noticing the first signs of bladder prolapse. I have a long-standing history of pelvic organ prolapse and post-partum incontinence in my family, and I knew I was going down that same path. Up until seeing Dr. Riley I practiced kegels religiously, and had no idea that was actually making things worse! My pelvic floor was in such a tight and contracted state that I had very little control over the muscles. Dr. Riley helps me to tune into my PF muscles and relax them, and gave me exercises to strengthen my transverse abs, which in turn have pulled my pelvic organs back up. An unexpected benefit I also experienced was more regular bowel movements that came without strain—something I’ve struggled with for my whole adult life.

Leading up to my due date, Dr. Riley helped me through breathing and visualization techniques to use during labor in order to keep my pelvic floor relaxed and help the baby move through the birth canal. My second birth experience and postpartum healing was SO different than my first and I credit it all to the PT and the time I invested into doing the exercises and stretches regularly throughout the last 6 months of my pregnancy. Some quick comparisons between my two birth experiences below:

-First birth: on high-dose of Pitocin for over 20 hours before pushing; Second birth: no Pitocin
-First birth: pushed for three hours; Second birth: never pushed! I was meditating on my breathing and relaxation exercises, and when I felt the urge to push I had a wave of nausea, I vomited and my baby shot out into the bed like it was nothing!
-First birth: 2nd degree tear, very swollen and could not be active for over 6 weeks; Second birth: still had a 2nd degree tear, but no swelling, and was taking trips to the zoo, long walks, and barre classes by 1 week PP. I credit this to the increased blood flow to my pelvic floor that comes with increased control.
-First birth: leaked urine EVERY single day up until my second birth; Second birth: have not leaked since having my baby!
-First birth: experienced constipation for three months PP and had to get a colon cleanse; Second birth: was regular again by 3 days PP.

TL/DR version: Dr. Riley and Body Motion have given me back my confidence and have empowered me in so many ways! It is the absolute best investment I have ever made in myself and would do it 10x over! I also have to mention the whole Body Motion team are just the sweetest! Devin, Isabelle, Dr. Victoria and Dr. Alison are so welcoming and personable and make every client feel so special! THANK YOU BODY MOTION!!

I first went to Body Motion Physical Therapy in 2024. I had painful bladder syndrome (Interstitial Cystitis) which feels like you have an UTI but there is no infection, along with an overactive bladder. It got really bad that I was working from home a lot and it took over a lot of my life. I found BMPT doing some research online and came in for a consultation. Once I started treatment, I noticed a huge difference in how I was feeling instantly. Not realizing and had no prior knowledge that everything can point back to the pelvic floor. As time went on, my bladder got stronger, no sudden urgency, no pelvic pain and overall back to feeling like myself. Now in 2026, I am back again due to being pregnant and wanting to be prepared for labor. Allison and her team are miracle workers, BMPT is such an amazing place for woman’s health and wellness!

I came to Body Motion for a singular issue, after a consult I realized this team could help with my issue and had so much more to offer inside the sessions you pay for. They fixed a prolapse for me, helped me with an incontinence issue and worked with me on becoming more in tune with my breath, core and more. This is a service where you are very vulnerable and I always felt safe and comfortable at my appointments. Each person was kind and knowledgeable. I know where to go in the future if I need body work done, they are worth their fee tenfold!

★★★★★

I found Body Motion 9 months after the delivery of my first child. I had a severe tear and had healed improperly and my body and intimate life were not in a good space. The team at Body Motion gave me a safe space to heal emotionally and physically. They specialize in pelvic floor health but don’t treat you in a bubble, they look at the whole person and tend to aches and pains throughout your body.

They supported me through my journey to conceive for child number two and they will be my first call when I deliver!

I’m happier, more confident in my body and abilities to deliver a child and heal postpartum, and get back to a healthy intimate life with my husband.

Thank you thank you thank you!!!

I can't say enough great things about everyone here. From the receptionists to the medical professionals, I am so much better for experiencing care here.

I had a C-section, my first one, six months ago, and a girlfriend recommended I go to Body Motion for pelvic floor support. I continue to thank her to this day because it has definitely changed my life!

I have five children, 4 born naturally and one via cesarean, and I have a lot of the typical symptoms with caring so many children to term and giving birth. They have all either improved or completely recovered. I have not had bladder incontinence a single time since I've started seeing Marielle and Theresa!

Overall, the goal was to get my body healing with pelvic floor releases, releasing c-section scar tissue, and making sure I have sufficient core strength to start engaging in the exercises I enjoy. Mission accomplished!

I love the whole team at Body Motion. I felt like I was in good hands from the first consultation. They explained the pelvic floor to me and were honest in their thorough examination of my pelvic floor. We discussed a treatment plan and what I could expect. For me that meant a lot of massage to teach my muscles to relax. It also involved learning to manage my symptoms and be in control of my body. I looked forward to my appointments because I saw positive changes with each one and I was taught how to do new exercises or therapies. They also had me do breathing exercises and other therapies to see if I was doing them right and corrected me when I wasn’t. I like the mix of using machines available and hands on therapy for optimum results. My treatment plan was for several visits which gave me an opportunity to meet almost all of the therapists. They are all different but work together very well to help you achieve results and understand your body.

★★★★★

Wow! First off, everyone at Body Motion is SO friendly and welcoming! Pelvic floor therapy can be very vulnerable, but everyone in the office made me feel safe and comfortable even just from the initial phone interview. I appreciated the care and thoughtfulness that went into the whole process of getting started. After an introduction interview with Dr. Riley Phelps, I felt very comfortable moving forward with treatment. Within the first few visits I already noticed a significant difference! Years and YEARS of pain were being worked through with an almost immediately noticeable difference. There have been a lot of different layers to work through, but Dr. Phelps has been persistent in finding the sources of each issue and tackling them efficiently, continuing to make tangible progress. When there are exercises to work through at home between visits, she demonstrates, explains, and walks me through each one so I understand what to do and feel confident doing them on my own. She’s very encouraging, always quick to point out progress and celebrate each step of healing! I feel like a completely different person even after just a few months, and look forward to seeing everyone in the office each visit! Isabele and Devyn are awesome at communicating and checking in between appointments and are quick to make me feel welcome and comfortable each visit. The only downside is not seeing everyone as often anymore because I’ve made so much progress healing that visits are much less frequent! Highly highly recommend.

If I could give this practice 10+ starts, I would! Almost three years after having my first baby and PT, my pelvic floor was still struggling and so I was. The therapists at Body Motion created a safe and comfortable environment where I could get the support I needed so re connect with my muscles. I cannot recommend this place enough if you're looking to get your body back into shape at any time in your lifetime.

★★★★★

I can’t say enough great things about Body Motion Physical Therapy! As a 50-year-old woman who started pelvic floor therapy three years ago, I’ve experienced incredible results thanks to their expert care. The entire staff is warm, professional, and truly dedicated to their patients’ well-being.

I’ve been seeing Dr. Katrina once a month, and she has been a game-changer for me. Going through perimenopause, I’ve noticed that many of my friends struggle with far more symptoms than I do—and I credit this to the targeted exercises, therapeutic massages, and red light therapy I’ve received here. The difference in my comfort, mobility, and overall health is remarkable.

I highly recommend Body Motion to all women, whether you’re pregnant, postpartum, or navigating menopause. Their holistic approach and personalized treatments make a world of difference. Thank you, Dr. Katrina and the entire team, for helping me feel my best at this stage of life!

Pelvic floor PT FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is pelvic floor physical therapy?

Pelvic floor physical therapy is a specialized branch of physical therapy that assesses and treats the muscles, connective tissue, and nerves of the pelvic floor, along with the breath, core, hips, and spine that work with them. Treatment can include hands-on (manual) therapy, targeted exercise, breathing and relaxation training, bladder and bowel habit retraining, and education.

Is leaking after having a baby normal?

It's common, but it isn't normal, and you don't have to accept it. Leaking with coughing, sneezing, or exercise is a sign your pelvic floor and core aren't working together the way they should. Pelvic floor PT can help whether you gave birth six weeks or sixteen years ago.

Why aren't Kegels working for me?

Kegels strengthen the pelvic floor, but many women with leaking, urgency, or pain actually have muscles that are too tight or poorly coordinated, not just weak. Squeezing harder can make those symptoms worse. Studies also show many women can't perform a correct Kegel from written or verbal instructions alone, which is why guidelines recommend supervised training. We assess what your pelvic floor actually needs: strength, relaxation, coordination, or all three.

Do I have to have an internal exam?

No. An internal exam is the most direct way to assess the pelvic floor muscles, and we'll explain exactly what it involves and why, but it is always your choice. We can start with an external assessment and go at your pace.

Can pelvic floor PT help with prolapse?

Yes. Pelvic floor PT can reduce heaviness and bulging symptoms by improving how your pelvic floor and core support your organs, and by changing habits like straining and breath-holding. A large randomized trial published in The Lancet in 2014 found that individualized pelvic floor muscle training improved prolapse symptoms. It's also valuable before and after prolapse surgery.

Is pelvic floor PT only for women who've had babies?

Not at all. We treat women through pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, menopause, and beyond, along with athletes, women recovering from surgery, and women with endometriosis, PCOS, interstitial cystitis, or chronic pelvic pain who have never been pregnant.

What happens at my first visit?

We start by listening: your symptoms, history, and goals. Then we assess your breathing, posture, core, hips, and pelvic floor to find the root cause. You'll leave with a clear explanation of what's going on, your individual plan of care, and things you can start doing right away.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on your symptoms, how long you've had them, and your goals. After your evaluation we'll recommend a plan, and most patients choose a 12, 16, or 24 visit package. Your progress is reassessed along the way so your plan keeps matching where you are.

Can I combine it with other treatments?

Yes, and we often do. Pelvic floor physical therapy pairs well with our regenerative therapies, including Shockwave, EMTT, and red light therapy. Combining approaches can help address tissue healing and muscle function together. Call (425) 582-0727 to ask what would make sense for you.

A message from our founder

Why I started Body Motion

Years ago, I was frustrated in my own postpartum body. Since then I've seen too many women in their 40s and 50s dealing with hip, back, and joint pain, and leaking too, who go on to need joint replacements and, later, live with incontinence. That cycle is why I started Body Motion. Most women wait months or even years before getting help, and the one thing I can promise is that doing nothing won't make pelvic floor issues better. The next step is to take action. — Dr. Allison Feldt, PT, DPT
