Postpartum recovery

Restore your core. Reclaim your life.

Leaking, ab separation, scar pain, and a back that aches every time you lift your baby are common after birth, but they are not something you have to live with. Our Doctors of Physical Therapy help you rebuild your core and pelvic floor, whether your baby is six weeks or sixteen years old.

Why it matters

Why your 6-week check isn't the finish line

Healing your body, not just clearing it.

At six weeks most women are told they're cleared to exercise, lift, and have sex. That visit is an important safety check, but it isn't a rehabilitation plan. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) describes postpartum care as an ongoing process rather than a single visit, and pregnancy and birth change your core, pelvic floor, and connective tissue in ways that take months to recover.

Every birth leaves scar tissue, either in the perineum or across the lower abdomen after a C-section, right where your pelvic floor and deep core muscles need to work together. Abdominal separation (diastasis recti) is also very common: one study found it in about 60% of women at six weeks postpartum and in roughly a third at one year (Sperstad et al., British Journal of Sports Medicine, 2016).

Our postpartum program is built on Dr. Allison Feldt's clinical protocols and delivered one-on-one by Doctors of Physical Therapy trained in pelvic health. We combine hands-on treatment, scar tissue release, and progressive core and pelvic floor training so you can lift, run, and live without leaking, pain, or pressure, and protect your joints for the decades ahead.

Seeing Allison has changed my life. I came to her with diastasis recti and incontinence issues, and her therapy and the exercises she gave me have truly helped turn my issues around. She is warm, empathetic, and kind and a pleasure to spend an hour with during appointments. She would also check on other issues I might have been having on the day of my appointment, with my neck or back. I can do the workouts I want, dance with my kids, and act with freedom since working with Allison. I cannot say enough great things about her!

I went to Body Motion PT in Edmonds for postpartum physical therapy, specifically to help with scar-tissue healing after delivery and to bring my abdominal muscles back together. From the very first visit, I felt supported, understood, and genuinely cared for during an incredibly vulnerable phase of new motherhood.

One of the things I appreciated most was how welcoming and flexible the team was with my newborn. They encouraged me to bring my baby to every appointment and adjusted the sessions around feeding, fussiness, and everything that comes with having a tiny infant. That level of compassion made such a difference for my mental and physical recovery.

The quality of care itself was outstanding. They created a personalized plan for my healing, explained everything in a way that made me feel empowered, and celebrated every milestone with me. The gentle back massages they incorporated were an unexpected but much-needed gift they helped relieve so much tension and pain I had been carrying since childbirth.

The entire team at Body Motion PT made me feel supported as a whole person, not just a patient. I’m so grateful for the progress I’ve made and for the kindness they showed me every step of the way. I highly recommend them to any postpartum mom looking for expert, compassionate care.

I cannot say enough wonderful and amazing things about this place. Not only did they help me with some post-partum pelvic floor issues (four kids...) but they are geniuses at the rest of your body! I happened to have injured my back while doing all sorts of wrong motions while taking care of kids, and they made sure I completely recovered. Not only did they make sure I recovered, but they checked my squat and deadlift forms to make sure I wasn’t doing anything wrong there! I feel like I can continue working out and weightlifting for a much longer time with heavier amounts because of these wonderful therapists. And to top it all off, I felt strong enough and, um, controlled enough with my pelvic floor to go out and buy another full-suspension mountain bike. I hadn’t biked since well before kids and I am so totally excited to get back in the trails (and show my kiddos that I can in fact do cool things).

I have received treatment from Drs. Allison and Riley. While I haven’t gotten any treatment from Dr. Victoria, she is always been kind and pleasant to interact with when I see her in the waiting area.

Isabele and Devyn are also some of the kindest and most comfortable people to interact with. I always feel welcome when I come into the waiting area.

I wish that I had known about this kind of physical therapy before I had kids. However, all is not lost. They have helped me so much, even now. I even purchased a couple sessions for my sister who is pregnant with her first baby!

Allison has changed the course of my post partum life in an incredible way! She eased my aches and pains during pregnancy, prepared me for a smooth delivery, and is helping me function in my new post partum body. She truly cares and this is always evident at every visit. You feel like you are just working with a friend which is just an added bonus! Highly recommend Allison to any pregnant lady! Also, Devyn who checks you in, schedules and helps run the office couldn't be sweeter and incredibly helpful!

★★★★★

Allison is a truly remarkable physical therapist and pelvic floor specialist. I visited her to help with pelvic pain during pregnancy and have been working with her for my postpartum recovery. I am amazed at the progress I’ve seen. She’s also discovered (and resolved) non-pregnancy-related body imbalances that delayed/prevented full recovery that I would have never addressed otherwise. I recommend anyone that is pregnant or postpartum (even years postpartum) meet with her for an assessment to ensure your body is healthy. An investment in her services is much less expensive that treating severe prolapse later on. Her experience and training is beyond any other physical therapists I’ve encountered and her patient care makes working with her comfortable. I’ve personally reached a level of recovery that my doctor said would only be gained through surgery in less than 8 weeks. I can’t recommend her enough.

★★★★★

I found Body Motion 9 months after the delivery of my first child. I had a severe tear and had healed improperly and my body and intimate life were not in a good space. The team at Body Motion gave me a safe space to heal emotionally and physically. They specialize in pelvic floor health but don’t treat you in a bubble, they look at the whole person and tend to aches and pains throughout your body.

They supported me through my journey to conceive for child number two and they will be my first call when I deliver!

I’m happier, more confident in my body and abilities to deliver a child and heal postpartum, and get back to a healthy intimate life with my husband.

Thank you thank you thank you!!!

If I could give this practice 10+ starts, I would! Almost three years after having my first baby and PT, my pelvic floor was still struggling and so I was. The therapists at Body Motion created a safe and comfortable environment where I could get the support I needed so re connect with my muscles. I cannot recommend this place enough if you’re looking to get your body back into shape at any time in your lifetime.

My name is Jenn, I have two kids (1st emergency episiotomy & 2nd c-section), and work full time. I came across Body Motion on a Facebook mom page. A mom was asking for pelvic floor therapy and many women attested Allison’s expertise. I had been battling foot and back pain, my stomach muscles were weak, and I felt like I couldn’t even start working out again without injuring myself. My youngest was a year and half, I decided I needed to focus on me again and what could it hurt to be evaluated. After my video eval to vocalize my issues, I came in for my in person eval. I can’t even describe the feeling of my eval and narrowing down where I had atrophy and my hips being unstable causing my foot pain. I was happy for the answers because I had tried everything on my own to alleviate my foot pain. I wanted to start working out again, but I felt too weak and in pain, and I wanted to be able to keep up with my kids for the long term without further injurying myself. I began my journey with Dr. Riley, seeing her weekly for 3 1/2 months. Each session was fine tuned for me and followed up with emails with pictures on all exercises covered. The hour spent with me would fly by and I would leave feeling better each and every time. I can’t even tell you how much of a turnaround I have had with my body. My feet pain is gone completely. I feel stronger with my core. I started working out again and I don’t have a fear of injuring myself more. I have improved my overall mentality by addressing these areas. I can’t speak enough about the whole office. They have become friends and I don’t ever want to stop! I went back for “tune ups” but mostly to say hey. It is worth every last dollar. Everyone is so sweet and I never stopped laughing. I have told all my friends about this place and I can’t say enough how great they are. I really wish pelvic floor therapy was introduced earlier on for women but especially postpartum. The symptoms we put up with or deem as normal could be alleviated by just going and being seen. These ladies are worth their salt and are informative, truly can not go wrong by going here. For yourself and the better of you, just go and take the first step and have that discovery conversation with the team.

I had a great experience with Dr. Victoria. She helped me with a number of issues and pain I was having after childbirth. Exercises were simple and effective. Scheduling was always easy as was submitting necessary paperwork for insurance. I felt very supported through my healing process!

Body Motion Physical Therapy was a huge success after having my son. I only had wished I had gone sooner. All staff members are very comforting and knowledgeable. I will definitely return for future needs!

Postpartum recovery FAQs

Frequently asked questions

When should I start postpartum physical therapy?

Gentle, guided care can begin in the first weeks after birth, and a full pelvic floor assessment is ideal once your provider clears you, often around six weeks. If you're months or years postpartum, it's not too late. We regularly help women long after their last baby.

I was cleared at six weeks. Why do I need PT?

Your six-week visit checks that you're healing safely. It doesn't assess how well your pelvic floor and core are working, or prepare you to run, lift, or return to sport. A pelvic floor PT evaluation looks at muscle strength and coordination, scar mobility, and abdominal separation, so you leave with a plan, not just permission.

Is leaking after having a baby normal?

It's common, but it isn't normal, and you don't have to accept it. Clinical guidelines, including those from the UK's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), recommend supervised pelvic floor muscle training as a first-line treatment for stress urinary incontinence.

Can diastasis recti heal without surgery?

In many cases, yes. Targeted training that restores tension and control through your midline, combined with breathing and pressure management, can improve how your core functions and looks. We measure your separation at your evaluation and track it as you progress. If a surgical consult is ever appropriate, we'll tell you.

I had a C-section. Do I need pelvic floor therapy?

Yes. Pregnancy loads the pelvic floor for months, and a C-section adds abdominal surgery and scar tissue through the layers of your core. Many C-section moms have leaking, pain with sex, or back pain. We treat both the scar and the pelvic floor.

Do I have to have an internal exam?

No. An internal exam is the most direct way to assess the pelvic floor muscles, and we'll explain how it can help, but it is always your choice. We can learn a lot from an external assessment and start treatment either way.

What happens at my first visit?

We start by listening to your birth story, symptoms, and goals. Then we assess your breathing, posture, abdominal wall, scar, hips, and pelvic floor, explain what we find in plain language, and give you a plan you can start that day.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on your symptoms, how long you've had them, and your goals. After your evaluation we'll recommend a plan of care and a 12, 16, or 24 visit package that fits it.

Can I combine postpartum PT with other treatments?

Yes. For stubborn scar tissue, ab separation, or slow-healing tissue, we may pair physical therapy with our regenerative therapies, including Shockwave, EMTT, and red light therapy, as part of your plan.

A message from our founder

Why I started Body Motion

Years ago, I was frustrated in my own postpartum body. Since then I've seen too many women in their 40s and 50s dealing with hip, back, and joint pain, and leaking too, who go on to need joint replacements and, later, live with incontinence. That cycle is why I started Body Motion. Most women wait months or even years before getting help, and the one thing I can promise is that doing nothing won't make pelvic floor issues better. The next step is to take action. — Dr. Allison Feldt, PT, DPT
