Birth preparation

Why prepare your pelvic floor for birth?

The one part of birth you can control is how prepared you are.

The Body Motion Birth Preparation Protocol is not standard pelvic floor physical therapy. We use manual therapy, breathwork, and targeted training to ease pregnancy pain, prepare your pelvic floor to lengthen and relax for delivery, and lower your risk of common birth injuries, which also speeds up healing afterward.

The research supports preparing early. The UK's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends pelvic floor muscle training during pregnancy, a 2020 Cochrane review found it reduces the risk of urinary leaking in late pregnancy and after birth, and Cochrane evidence shows perineal massage from about 35 weeks reduces tearing that needs stitches, especially with a first vaginal birth.

Dr. Allison Feldt, PT, DPT, created our birth prep protocols after her own first birth, when she pushed for hours. Today our clients push for less than an hour on average, and as a mom of three she knows firsthand what it takes to prepare your body for labor.

Words truly cannot express how grateful I am to Body Motion and their entire team. I started seeing them around 20 weeks pregnant after being recommended by my chiropractor. I went in for that first consult with not a clue what pelvic floor therapy was, little to no knowledge on my body and how pregnancy was affecting it, and absolutely terrified of birth and postpartum recovery. They cared for me throughout the entire second half of my pregnancy and I always left feeling incredibly encouraged, empowered, and further educated on how to feel great in pregnancy and confident in the birthing process. My husband was able to join me for a couple sessions closer to birth as well which was a crucial resource—helping him be the very best advocate and birth partner when the time came. Instead of feeling scared in labor I knew exactly what my body was doing and how to support it through breath and movement + advocate for myself to my birth team regarding how I wanted to push. My nurses told me to expect to push for 3+ hours as a first time mom and I chuckled knowing it would be much quicker with the tools I gained from Body Motion. My daughter was born in less than 30 minutes of pushing and I had very minimal tearing. My recovery was quick and easy. Body Motion has continued to be a crucial part of my postpartum recovery—even at almost 9 months postpartum I continue to see them monthly for maintenance. Without a doubt, this was the best money we spent throughout my pregnancy and continues to be the greatest investment for health and longevity in postpartum and beyond. Every single woman deserves this type of care.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you Body Motion!!♥️

I really enjoyed my sessions here! They helped prepare my body for labor and with my first baby I pushed for 12 minutes and she was here! I truly don’t think that would have been the case if it were for body motion! After birth I returned for several months to heal my body and pelvic floor and feel that it did wonders for my body 🙂

I am so happy I learned about the importance of pelvic floor PT early in my first pregnancy! I began seeing Riley at Body Motion PT at about 14 weeks pregnant with the goal of preparing my body for pregnancy and labor. Riley is extremely knowledgeable and professional and with her regular treatments I was able to remain active and relatively pain-free my entire pregnancy. I just delivered a week ago and felt as prepared for labor as I could be as a first time mom. I was made aware of optimal pushing positions for my body, the importance of diaphragmatic breathing, and how to effectively engage/relax my pelvic floor. My labor was smooth and quick, and the nurses/midwives couldn’t believe how strong and coordinated my pushing was! I’m looking forward to having a postpartum follow up with Riley next week. 🙂

I am so thankful I was referred to Body Motion PT. I started going in my 2nd trimester and continued through post-partum. Birthing my baby was very smooth/effective because of all the work I did prior with Body Motion PT, I was in and out of the hospital within 20hours with almost no tearing! All of the PT’s are extremely kind and genuinely care about it you and your babies well being. The post partum work they did contributed to my quick recovery. I recommend Body Motion to any friend/family that I can!

★★★★★

I started going to Body Motion PT in my 3rd trimester and 100% credit Dr. Allison and her team with my success. This was my first pregnancy and I wanted to go into the birth fully prepared.

Thank goodness I went here prior to birth! I had a natural birth with no tearing, no episiotomy, and no induction needed. Just my body, a little luck, and a LOT of hard work! haha!

I have continued to see Dr. Allison for postpartum healing as well. She has helped immensely in my recovery. I highly recommend this place for anyone, especially women who are pregnant or postpartum!

I have been coming here pre, during, and now post pregnancy. By far, this was worth it!! They were able to give me tools and prepare myself for birth, which was 40 minutes of pushing and no tearing!! They have also helped healed by body, from neck to knee pain, to posture. The staff is incredibly helpful, positive, and so caring and sweet. Every chance I get, I try to recommend this place to everyone I know. It’s a little less than a 2 hour drive round trip for me to get to this place, but it’s worth every appointment.

★★★★★

During my third trimester of pregnancy, I was in so much pain from my piriformis muscle that I was struggling to walk, get out of bed, etc. PT at Body Motion eliminated my pain, rendering the end of my pregnancy so much more manageable. I was so impressed with the quality of the care — from the sessions themselves to the stretches and other recommendations they suggested I do at home. I believe the PT made for a much better delivery, as I was more familiar with how to relax my pelvic floor muscles and the muscles themselves were more loose. I remember being a bit daunted by the cost of PT - wondering if I’d be better off going through my insurance. But ultimately, going to Body Motion who has such expertise in pregnancy and post partum and who can make the best care decisions for you, not based just on what insurance will cover, was so worth it. I can’t recommend enough!

★★★★★

With my second pregnancy at about 20 weeks, I had so much pain in my SI joint at the end of my day, to the point where I could hardly walk or take care of my toddler. With just a few simple exercises and at home recommendations, Allison was able to alleviate my pain over night and allow me to continue to working as a pediatric PT and take care of daily mama duties! Thank you Allison!!

★★★★★

I started seeing Allison early on in during my first pregnancy and I am so happy I went! She helped me through aches and pains during my pregnancy as well as giving me stretches for my very tight muscles! I had an uncomplicated birth with no tears and I attribute a lot of that to all the hard work Allison put in with me over the months prior! I suggest her to all my friends who are pregnant or postpartum. She treats people on a whole. Allison and her secretary Devyn are so friendly and wonderful to work with, I felt so comfortable with with!

★★★★★

I wish I could give them 6 stars. This has by far been the best investment into myself and my labor prep that I have made. FTM here with a baby who’s due any day and I couldn’t feel more calm and ready for my labor experience. I was hesitant to sign up due to price, but I am so grateful that I made the choice. Thank you Body Motion!!!

★★★★★

I am so glad I received care here! The staff is wonderful, and they eliminated pain I've had near my tailbone for years, as well as prepared me for labor. I feel so much more confident in my pregnancy with the tools they've given me. And knowing that they'll be available for postpartum care and for future pregnancies is a huge relief. They have taken something that is unpleasant in nature (it hurts, there was no getting around that for me) and made it something that I really looked forward to, because not only is their office an inviting place, but I feel so much better after my time spent there.

Pregnancy support FAQs

Frequently asked questions

When should I start pelvic floor PT in pregnancy?

Any time. Starting early lets us treat aches before they build and prepare gradually, but it's never too late. We regularly see women in their last few weeks before their due date.

Is pelvic floor therapy safe during pregnancy?

Yes. Treatment is gentle and adapted to each stage of pregnancy, and we coordinate with your OB or midwife whenever needed. ACOG encourages regular physical activity for most people with uncomplicated pregnancies.

Can physical therapy reduce my risk of tearing?

Preparation helps. Learning to relax and lengthen your pelvic floor, practicing your push, and perineal massage from about 35 weeks all help prepare your tissues. Cochrane evidence shows antenatal perineal massage reduces tearing that needs stitches, especially for first births.

Won't Kegels prepare me for birth?

Not on their own. Birth asks your pelvic floor to lengthen and relax, not just contract. Many pregnant women already hold too much tension, so we teach relaxation, breath, and coordination along with strength.

Can it help me avoid a C-section?

No one can guarantee how birth will go, and a C-section is sometimes the safest choice. Our protocols are designed to improve pelvic mobility and pushing so you have the best chance at the vaginal birth you want, and they help you recover either way.

Do I have to have an internal exam?

No. An internal assessment can tell us a lot about your pelvic floor before birth, and we'll explain how, but it is always your choice. We can start treatment either way.

Is pain during pregnancy normal?

It's common, but you don't have to just live with it. Pubic bone, SI joint, back, rib, and hip pain usually respond well to hands-on treatment and small changes to how you move, sit, and sleep.

I can't come in person. Is there another option?

Yes. Our Online Birth Prep Program teaches Dr. Allison's pelvic floor conditioning for birth in six video modules you can follow from home.

A message from our founder

Why I started Body Motion

Years ago, I was frustrated in my own postpartum body. Since then I've seen too many women in their 40s and 50s dealing with hip, back, and joint pain, and leaking too, who go on to need joint replacements and, later, live with incontinence. That cycle is why I started Body Motion. Most women wait months or even years before getting help, and the one thing I can promise is that doing nothing won't make pelvic floor issues better. The next step is to take action. — Dr. Allison Feldt, PT, DPT
