Kegel’s Don’t Help With Postpartum Healing

By Dr. Allison Feldt, PT, DPT 3 min read

The pelvic floor is the foundation of our core strength and support our joints and skeleton. That is why prioritizing pelvic floor healing is essential postpartum. As a Pelvic Expert Physical Therapist, Owner Of Body Motion Physical Theraoy and Author of Restore Your Body After Kids: The Secret To Avoid Peeing Your Pants And Achy Joints As You Age” and mom of three.  I have created exclusive protocols to optimize our bodies postpartum based off not just my educational and clinical experience but my personal experience as well.

Contrary to popular the pelvic floor is tighter postpartum because birth causes scar tissue.

Birth causes scar tissue in the pelvic floor whether you had a c-section or vaginal birth. A c-section also causes abdominal scars. Scar tissue limits bloodflow and creates adhesions which is when scar tissue binds together. Adhesions and scar tissue limit the blood flow and movement of the pelvic floor often causing it to become hypertonic, extremely tight. Kegel’s are a pelvic floor contraction that continues to limit blood flow and helps to create adhesions.

Many common postpartum issues are linked to a tight pelvic floor

  • Leaking urine
  • Constipation
  • Weak core
  • Diastasis Recti
  • Sciatica Pain
  • Hip Pain
  • Back Pain
  • Pain with intimacy

Not All Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist Will Provide Effective Postpartum Healing

Body Motion Physical Therapy is leading the Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy industry using not only exclusive manual therapy techniques and protocolls but offering Body Motion wave technology, which uses radial pressure waves to break up adhesions and scar tissue on a level that manual therapy cannot. Radial pressure waves support cellular rejuvenation and increased bloodflow to not only the muscles but the organs as well. We have seen amazing results for individuals who have had cesereans in reducing the appearance of the scar but the real magic is how deeply it can penetrate scar tissue and adhesions in the deep layers of the pelvic floor.
