Should you Get Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy During Pregnancy

By Dr. Allison Feldt, PT, DPT 3 min read

Pelvic Floor During Pregnancy isn’t to “make your pelvic floor stronger.” What is often considered a “strong pelvic floor” is a “tight pelvic floor,” but that is the opposite of what you want going into birth.

The pelvic floor plays a massive role in the birthing process.

Learning to control these muscles will help you give birth with more ease and have less birth trauma. Kegel’s are often what we consider to be a pelvic floor exercise. A Kegel is a contraction of these muscles, but during birth, we have to relax and bulge these muscles to assist the baby out of the vaginal canal.

As a Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist and Owner of Body Motion Physical Therapy

I created exclusive protocols to make fundamental changes in the quality of the pelvic floor muscles, teach coordination of these muscles and how to push safely. I teach a quarterly class at the local Swedish hospital to share my techniques with the onboarding of Labor and Delivery Nurses.

The impact of pelvic floor coordination, effective, safe breathing, and determining an individual’s optimal pushing position have allowed my Body Motion Physical Therapy team to assist hundreds of women each year with their pregnancy and birth. We see that our clients make for less than an hour, c-section rates are 20% less than the national average, and birth injuries are minimal and heal quickly postpartum because the muscles are strong and hydrated.

Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy During Pregnancy at Body Motion PT has led to some of the most fantastic birth stories, and they are genuinely one of the highlights of my life! Knowing that my team and I were a part of someone’s birth experience and that we were able to prevent trauma to their body that would follow them throughout their life is honestly why I started Body Motion!

Here are some recent reviews from clients:

“I enjoyed my sessions here! They helped prepare my body for labor, and with my first baby, I pushed for 12 minutes, and she was here! I don’t think that would have been the case if it were for body motion! After birth, I returned for several months to heal my body and pelvic floor and feel that it did wonders for my body :)”

“I have been coming here pre-, during, and now post-pregnancy. By far, this was worth it!! They were able to give me tools and prepare me for birth, which was 40 minutes of pushing and no tearing!! They have also helped heal the body, from neck to knee pain to posture. The staff is accommodating, positive, caring, and sweet. I try to recommend this place to everyone I know every chance I get.”
