Neck Pain Relief in Pregnancy

By Dr. Allison Feldt, PT, DPT 3 min read

Pregnancy is a beautiful journey, but it can bring discomforts like waking up with a stiff neck or numb, tingling hands. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone—and there are effective ways to ease these issues. I’m Dr. Allison Feldt, a pelvic health physical therapist and owner of Body Motion Physical Therapy. Let’s explore why this happens and how you can feel better, because pain shouldn’t be your pregnancy norm.

Why Does Pregnancy Cause Neck Pain and Hand Numbness?

Hormones like relaxin and progesterone loosen your joints to prepare for childbirth, but this affects your entire body, including your spine and neck. This increased flexibility can strain your spine during sleep, causing tight neck muscles, stiffness, and numbness that spreads to your hands.

Two Common Causes: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

Here are the top culprits behind hand numbness in pregnancy:

  1. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)
    • What is it? Compression of the median nerve in the wrist, often due to fluid retention and increased blood volume.
    • When does it happen? During sleep or throughout the day.
    • How to help:
      • Keep wrists straight (not bent or clenched) while sleeping.
      • Wear wrist splints at night.
      • Hug a body pillow to align your arms.
  2. Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS)
    • What is it? Compression of nerves or blood vessels between your neck, collarbone, and armpit, often from poor posture or tight neck muscles.
    • Symptoms: Numbness, tingling, or heaviness in your arms or hands.
    • How to help:
      • Side-sleep with a rolled towel in the crook of your neck to keep your spine neutral.
      • Place a pillow under your belly to prevent spinal twisting.
      • Use a pillow that’s not too high or too flat to maintain neutral neck alignment.

Optimize Your Sleep Position

Side-sleeping is ideal during pregnancy, but proper positioning is key:

  • Keep wrists and hands neutral, not curled.
  • Use a body pillow to support your arms, knees, and belly.
  • Avoid “crunching” your neck into the pillow or overextending it upward.
This setup reduces pressure on nerves and blood vessels, helping prevent numbness and pain.

Daytime Posture Impacts Nighttime Comfort

Poor posture during the day can worsen how you feel when you wake up. Try these quick fixes:

  • Tuck your chin slightly and lift the back of your head (embrace the double chin!).
  • Pull shoulder blades back and down.
  • Sit with a straight spine and neutral pelvis.
  • Avoid leaning your head forward, especially when working or using your phone.
Check your posture hourly. If muscles tire, gently shake them out and reset.

Pro Tip: Support Your Spine With Pillows

A rotated or collapsed spine during sleep can increase neck and nerve tension. Place a pillow under your belly and between your knees to maintain spinal alignment. This also helps with hip pain, SI joint issues, and low back discomfort—common pregnancy complaints.

Key Takeaways

Pregnancy brings incredible changes, but pain and numbness don’t have to be part of it. Simple adjustments to your sleep position and daytime posture can significantly reduce discomfort. If you’re experiencing:

  • Numb or tingling hands
  • Neck stiffness or pain
  • Sleep-related discomfort
…it’s time to tweak how you sleep and move throughout the day.
