Things I Wish I Knew Before Menopause

By Dr. Allison Feldt, PT, DPT 2 min read

Menopause is so much more than hot flashes and an end to periods.

This natural phenomenon is part of a healthy life cycle, and prioritizing health during perimenopause can mitigate symptoms.

Pelvic Floor Issues Contribute To Worsened Menopause Symptoms

Several pelvic floor dysfunctions are considered normal as we age but are actually what contributes to chronic pain and the need for medications and surgeries throughout our lifetime. These pelvic floor dysfunctions include:

  • Leaking urine
  • Constipation
  • Weak core
  • Diastasis Recti
  • Sciatica Pain
  • Hip Pain
  • Back Pain
  • Pain with intimacy

Protein Intake Is Key To Aging Gracefully

As we age, we lose muscle mass, and our joints become more vulnerable to injury. Maintaining a high-protein diet and taking calcium supplements can improve physical strength and prevent joint injuries. Low bone density often contributes to joint issues, making us more inclined to them and increasing the need for joint replacements and injections.

Vaginal Dryness Is Not Solely Based On Hormones

Yes, there is a link to lower estrogen levels causing vaginal dryness but blood flow to the pelvic floor and organs also matter. Postpartum or not, the pelvic floor’s role in our lives is crucial and is often overlooked. Stress, trauma, infections, and physical activity can all affect the quality of the pelvic floor muscles.
